Student spotlight – Bettye Apenteng

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

My best memory at UNMC was when I had the opportunity to attend a career panel organized by the College of Public Health for its current and prospective students. The event allowed students to network, not only with other students, but also with leaders and scholars in the field of public health practice. We were presented with career options as well as valuable resources to help us when we enter the job market.

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

Working Together — UNMC provides numerous examples of how to get things accomplished effectively through teamwork. One notable example was when the university, with the leadership of Dr. Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway organized grass-root efforts to raise funds to help Japan in the wake of the earthquake/tsunami last year. The effort not only involved the UNMC community but also the larger Omaha community. I saw community in action then and I was amazed at how things could get done when we worked as a team.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I love cooking, especially trying new recipes.
  • I love drawing and painting. I can make pretty good reproductions of fictional cartoon characters.
  • I love sports. Although I am not very good at playing any sport, I enjoy watching virtually all sports.
