Student spotlight – Shea Welsh

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet Shea Welsh, a fourth-year medical student.

  • Name: Shea Welsh
  • Hometown: Pender, Neb.
  • Number of years at UNMC: Fourth-year medical student

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

One of my best memories was being an resident adviser (RA) for the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program after my first year of medical school. We got to work with a talented group of diverse students and we had the best group of RA’s to work and play with. Teaching the students about the experiences of medical school was both exciting and challenging.

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

Leadership. Getting ready to start residency this summer (scary thought), I feel medical school both in the classroom and the wards has equipped me well with the ability to be a leader in the hospital or community into which I match.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I’m spending a month in China next month with three classmates to assist in family medicine partnership between UNMC and Xi’an Jiaotong University School of Medicine.
  • I’m hoping to match in family medicine.
  • If I didn’t go into medicine, I’d probably be a teacher. I could see myself in academic medicine.
