Lookin’ at U – Nikki Hackendahl

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.

This week, we learn more about Nikki Hackendahl, a Marketing Specialist in the Human Genetics Lab at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

Nikki Hackendahl
  • Name: Nicole (Nikki) Hackendahl
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • Number of years at UNMC: 10

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

When an entry in Dr. (Warren) Sanger’s calendar was titled “How to Ruin an Efficient Lab.” I’m sure he meant “run.” (Freud would say otherwise.) Nonetheless, I think his typo is a perfect example of why support staff are so valuable!

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

Trusted resource. We are tucked away in MMI on the NW corner of campus, (that building with the yellow awning) so we are not very visible, but there is some really awesome stuff happening in our lab. New tests. Improved tests. And did you know that our Clinical Genetics Department has nine genetic counselors on staff? NINE! I think there are only a baker’s dozen in the entire state! Recently, the Governor signed into law licensure for genetic counselors, which is a much deserved professional victory for them.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • With tornado season in full swing, you all should know that I am a huge pansy in bad weather. The minute I hear those sirens, I’m in the basement with my miniature St. Joseph figure, battery powered radio and lights, and a few “Our Family” bottled waters.
  • I once scored a point for the other team in middle school basketball.
  • My life would not be a happy one without sticky notes or file folders.

I remember when you made the basketball shot to help out the other team, I was there. This just goes to show that you have been a team member even in middle school (able to multi-task for EVERYONE involved)
We are so proud of you, keep up the good work.– Dad
