Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.

This week, we learn more about Sandy Larsen, lead teacher in the Bear Room at the UNMC Child Development Center.

Sandy Larsen
  • Name: Sandy Larsen
  • Hometown: Council Bluffs
  • Number of years at UNMC: 21 years

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

In 2002, I got the Gold U award, and that was neat. And since then I have gotten the silver award, too. But the best memories are of the children. At “graduation,” I give each of them a graduation gift and I write down something special that I remember from them as a baby, something that I remember them doing. I get to have a “best memory” from every child.

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

I will pick working together. At all times, we work as a team. Parents should feel good about leaving their child here. Our doors are always open for the parents to stop in. We have always done the best we can to make the children happy, and their parents, too. The center is like a big family.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I love going to movies and reading books.
  • I love the outside and spending time with the grandchildren — even though they are older now and do their own thing. But that’s OK, I have my kids here, and I love watching them grow and go from room to room.
  • I love what I do. Life is good.

"Miss Sandy," this past weekend, I was organizing some files at home, and I came across photos and artwork from Asa and Athena's time in the Bear Room. What fun we had going through them and reminiscing about the CDC!
