Dr. Beck receives April Gold ‘U’ award

He’s developed a certificate program for clerkship administrators that more than 150 people from throughout the country have taken, done research — mostly in his own time — into medical education improvement and is a strong advocate for students in the College of Medicine.

For all of this and more, Gary Beck, Ph.D., education and researcher coordinator in the department of pediatrics, received the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award for the month of April.

“Gary has set an example for all clerkship administrators in his drive for scholarship,” his nominator said. “He also has garnered the respect of his colleagues as a hard-working, organized, and knowledgeable individual.”

Below we hear more from our latest Gold ‘U’ recipient.

Describe your job in laymen terms.

Since 1997, I have been the clerkship administrator for the department of pediatrics. As clerkship administrator, I manage the medical student education for the juniors and seniors. I also facilitate a small group with Dr. Jeff Harrison in the Integrated Clinical Experience with first- and second-year students.

What is your best on-the-job memory?

In 1999, the graduating class invited me to their senior banquet. I felt honored since the class limits who can attend. What was astounding about it was receiving their first-ever appreciation award for a clerkship coordinator. It was validation that my efforts to be an advocate for students in their educational pursuits were appreciated.

What is the best part of your job?

Learning something new all of the time and collaborating with others. There are challenges educators face as new accreditation standards come out that require you to be creative in meeting the requirements and ensuring the students receive a quality education. Collaborating with others and investigating possibilities is always motivating. I love what I do, even after 15-plus years.
