Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.
Vimla Band, Ph.D., professor and chairwoman of genetics, cell biology and anatomy, has been named a fellow in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine. ELAM is the only U.S. program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for positions of leadership at academic health centers, where they can ultimately play a role in academic health organizations becoming more inclusive of different perspectives and responsive to societal needs and expectations.
Renaisa Anthony, M.D., M.P.H., interim director of the College of Public Health’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities, was accepted as a scholar in the 2012 M Alfred Haynes Research Training Institute for Social Equity hosted by Meharry University. In addition, Dr. Anthony was sponsored by the American Medical Association to attend the Health Disparities Brain Trust in Washington.
UNMC nursing student Michelle Johnson recently was selected as a 2012-2014 Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar. Johnson, of Lincoln, is the first UNMC student to receive the scholarship, which provides support for doctoral students who aspire to teach in nursing colleges. The scholarship program provides $10,000 for two years with half matched by the college.
Andras Nagy, Ph.D., professor and senior investigator at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at the University of Toronto, who was responsible for several breakthroughs in the development of mouse models, will receive the A. Ross McIntyre Award today at 10 a.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. The award was named for Dr. McIntyre, chairman of the UNMC Department of Physiology and Pharmacology from 1935-1967.
Members of the Seven Doctors Project — a writers workshop that pairs UNMC faculty members with Omaha-area writers — will read some of their works on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Side Door Lounge (3530 Leavenworth St.). The reading is part of a fundraiser for the Nebraska Writers Collective, which places poets in Omaha-area schools. UNMC readers include:
- Iqbal Ahmad, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences;
- Mary Helms, associate director and associate professor in the McGoogan Library of Medicine;
- Kris McVea, M.D., associate professor of family medicine;
- Bud Shaw, M.D., professor of surgery;
- Marissa Stanton, Ph.D., post-doctoral research associate in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology; and
- Melody Montgomery, editorial grants associate.
