INBRE Scholars – Meet Tanner Johnson

Twenty-eight students from nine different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program this summer.

The program was created to:

• Expose students to serious biomedical research;
  
• Build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions; and
  
• Strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research.

Science is truly mind-blowing. From the large scale of the universe to the microscopic organisms, beauty and intricacy can be seen at every level.

I will most definitely pursue a career in science. After earning my undergraduate degree, I plan to attend UNMC to pursue either an M.D. or Ph.D. It is my hope to work to develop antibiotics, vaccines and other treatments against common ailments and I would also like to teach at a high academic level at some point.

INBRE is an extraordinary program that allows many students to get their first look at research and gain laboratory experience. The hands-on training it provides allow students to get an insight into the careers that medical research has to offer and opens up many different opportunities in the science field as well.
