The UNMC Intellectual Property Office (IPO) will acknowledge UNMC inventors at this year’s upcoming annual Inventors Recognition Reception. All inventors are invited to attend the reception, which will take place on June 10, 2003, in the University Hospital Private Dining Room.

Drakes named ‘legacy family’ at UNMC

McCook, Neb., residents Richard and Mary Lou Drake always encouraged their seven children to “aim for the top of the tree.”

The children heeded their parents’ advice and have continued to climb to life’s uppermost branches. Five of the Drake children – Cathy, Carol, Cindy, Casey and Mary Kay (Markie) – graduated with degrees from UNMC. The Drakes were recently honored as the second “legacy family” at UNMC.

Many UNMC, NHS and UMA employees took part in the Ninth Annual Omaha-Metro American Heart Walk on May 3, which was co-sponsored by UNMC and UMA.

Legislators approve budget bill

Nebraska lawmakers overrode two vetoes pertaining to the University of Nebraska on Tuesday, meaning NU will see a 4.7 percent reduction in its state appropriation in 2003-2004.

Destination Midtown informational sessions scheduled

Harold M. Maurer, M.D., remembers well the meeting at the Omaha Chamber of Commerce.

Several presentations were taking place, all talking about renewal projects east of 24th Street and west of 72nd Street in Omaha. Dr. Maurer asked the question, “What about Midtown?”

June 12 celebration marks successful HIPAA implementation

NHS, UNMC & UMA will host a celebration on Thursday, June 12, to recognize employees for the successful implementation of HIPAA. Ice cream sandwiches will be served at the celebration, which will take place from 1-4 p.m. in the courtyard between Swanson Hall and the visitor parking structure.

Dr. Schnoes wins MMI poster contest

Connie Schnoes, Ph.D., a one-year post-doctoral psychology fellow at Munroe-Meyer Institute, was judged the winner of MMI’s Fourth Annual Poster Session, which took place May 14. Dr. Schnoes completed her Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln last August.

In all, 14 posters from graduate students were presented at the poster session. Thirteen faculty and staff posters also were presented, but those were not judged for the contest.

Open house slated for May 31 at Baker Place

As a way to show appreciation to the north Omaha community and its neighbors, UNMC, NHS and the North Omaha Community Care Council (NOCCC) will host an open house Saturday, May 31 at the University Medical Associates (UMA) Health Center, 5050 Ames Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
