This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony on Feb. 24 for UNMC's 2021 Scientist Laureate, Distinguished Scientist, New Investigator and Community Service to Research Award recipients.

Distinguished Scientist Award

The Distinguished Scientist Award -- which is sponsored by the chancellor -- recognizes researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.

  • Name: Prakash Radhakrishnan, PhD
  • Title: Associate professor, UNMC Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases
  • Joined UNMC: May 2005
  • Hometown: Ko.Poovanur, Tamil Nadu, India

Research focus:

  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Tumor glycobiology

Why is research important in the world today?

To understand the cause of disease progression, identify novel targets and develop targeted therapeutics to improve patients’ survival and quality of life.

My research will make a difference because:

Pancreatic cancer is a highly lethal disease. Chemotherapies remain the mainstay for advanced-stage pancreatic cancer; they produce incomplete responses and high toxicities. Thus, our research seeks to understand the molecular basis of disease progression and develop new tumor glycobiology-based targeted therapy for pancreatic cancer.

The best advice I’ve ever received is:

Be persistent and hardworking

Three things you may not know about me are:

  • I recently learned to cook some tasty foods that my family loves.
  • I enjoy writing Tamil poetry.
  • My academic building blocks are Michael Hollingsworth, PhD, Niranjali Devaraj, PhD, and Malathi Sekhar, PhD.
