Michelle Ellermeier, an instructor at the UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division, died Feb. 27 at the age of 55. She joined the college in 2008.

"Michelle touched the lives of so many of us – students, staff and faculty," said Cathrin Carithers, DNP, assistant dean of the Kearney Division. "She will always be remembered as a student advocate, a UNMC advocate, a colleague and friend. We will miss her presence, her wisdom, her team spirit and her bright smile. The college celebrates her life and legacy."

Before joining UNMC, Ellermeier worked as a registered nurse at the Grand Island Veterans Home and later as a house supervisor at the Central Nebraska Veterans Home.

Ellermeier, of Hazard, Nebraska, earned both her bachelor’s degree in nursing (1994) and master’s in nursing (2005) from UNMC. Among other organizations, she was a member of the American Nurses Association and American Holistic Nurses Association.

Her awards include the College of Nursing's Spirit of Shared Governance Award, which she received twice. The award recognizes people who demonstrate positive action toward using the governance system to promote shared solutions and collegiality, serve as a role model, provide leadership and mentor others.

No funeral service is planned. Ellermeier's obituary is posted online.

Michelle was an amazing co-worker. She was just the best! She did so many amazing things. I would like to recognize that she worked on a project with myself and Sue Schuelke that will be helping Farmers and Nurses for years to come. She helped to develop the Virtual Reality Simulation built by the College of Nursing/Public Health and Agriculture College with the help of UNL College of Computer Science students called Rollover Ranch! Michelle Ellermeier shall always be a fearless champion for social Justice, and leader for the public’s health. Since her time years ago in the original Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute, I have been honored to be a mentor, colleague, and sisterfriend. May her memory be for a blessing.
