Dr. Oliveto appointed new Anderson Professor of Radiology

Jennifer Oliveto, MD

UNMC has appointed Jennifer Oliveto, MD, as the inaugural Joseph C. Anderson, MD, & Darlene Anderson Professor of Radiology.

The professorship is named in honor of Joseph Anderson, MD, and his late wife, Darlene. Joseph Anderson retired from UNMC in 2021 as a professor and vice chair of radiology after having spent 50 years on campus. The professorship was created through the University of Nebraska Foundation with the generous support of Joseph and Darlene Anderson and friends.

“I am extremely pleased that Dr. Oliveto has been selected as the first Joseph C. Anderson, MD, & Darlene Anderson Professor of Radiology,” Dr. Anderson said. “She is an indispensable member of the radiology faculty and an excellent mentor to UNMC residents and fellows. I am confident she will do a great job.”

Craig Walker, MD, professor and the Howard B. Hunt Centennial Chair in the Department of Radiology, praised Dr. Anderson’s longtime service to the department and UNMC.

“Throughout his tenure, Joe was an excellent educator and responsible for teaching innumerable ultrasonography students and radiology residents. Joe and Darlene Anderson also helped to establish the Joseph C. Anderson, MD, & Darlene Anderson Distinguished Professor of Imaging Sciences in the College of Allied Health Professions,” Dr. Walker said.

Dr. Oliveto completed her diagnostic radiology residency and abdominal imaging fellowship at UNMC, then joined the department and was promoted to associate professor in 2015. She is the abdominal imaging MR director and the abdominal imaging division chief. She also has been instrumental in the implementation of new MR protocols for complex disease processes, allowing patients to avoid radiation associated with CT exams.

Dr. Oliveto is recognized as an outstanding clinician and educator. She received the Radiology Golden Apple Teaching Award in 2008 and the Abdominal Division — Clinical Resident Teaching Award in 2016. She also has been involved with research, collaborating on a grant completed in 2022 titled, “Targeting the Metabolic Basis of Cachexia in Pancreatic Cancer.”

“Dr. Oliveto’s appointment as the Joseph C. Anderson, MD, & Darlene Anderson Professor of Radiology recognizes her achievements and provides important additional funds to support her continued scholarly efforts,” Dr. Walker said.

The gift to create the professorship is part of “Only in Nebraska: A Campaign for Our University’s Future.” The campaign has a goal to raise $3 billion from 150,000 unique benefactors to support the University of Nebraska. More information is at the Only in Nebraska website.
