Smokers’ response to nicotine dependence genotyping focus of study

A test is now available through the College of Nursing to determine your genetic risk for nicotine dependence.

You may be eligible to participate in a study — which may help you learn your risk and see if it impacts your smoking behavior — if you are:

  • A smoker, 19 years or older, who smokes at least 10 cigarettes per day; and
  • Interested in quitting smoking at some time in the future.

Participants must:

  • Attend one educational session about smoking and genetics;
  • Provide a sample for genetic testing for nicotine dependence risk; and
  • Participate in data collection about smoking behaviors thoughts and feelings — including trying to quit.

A stipend is available for participation. Contact Victoria Graeve-Cunningham at 402-559-6549 or v.graevecunningham@unmc.edu if you’re interested in the study.
