Workshop explores creative problem solving

Victoria Kennel, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions Division of Research Development, will be the speaker at tonight’s Transferable Skills Workshop.

Dr. Kennel will speak on “Thinking Outside the Box: Creative Thinking as a Key Component of Innovation and Problem Solving,” the second in a three-part series on critical and creative thinking.

Dr. Kennel holds a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology, and her research has included work in creativity and innovation in organizations.

“A lot of my work in graduate school explored the cognitive process of creative problem solving,” she said.

For the workshop, she will start by discussing the definition of creativity and exploring why it matters in problem solving, particularly in the sciences.

“We’ll talk through the steps of the creative problem-solving process, and I will offer best practices, as well as discussing tools to define problems and to generate creative ideas,” Dr. Kennel said.

The workshop will also help participants identify barriers to, and opportunities for, creative problem-solving in their work.

The presentation will be held at a new location, in the Sorrell Center, Room 1005, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. It is open to all UNMC graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and there will be free pizza and soft drinks for the first 50 attendees.

Transferrable skills workshops, presented by Graduate Studies, are held on the second Wednesday of each month during the fall and spring semesters.
