In recognition of Minority Health Month, the UNMC Center for Reducing Health Disparities is launching the Race-Inclusion-Diversity & Equity (RIDE) initiative. Two events are scheduled to engage all faculty, staff, students and community partners in a conversation about race, inclusion, diversity and equity at UNMC.
The first event, “Face of Race, Inclusion, Diversity & Equity at UNMC,” will take place on April 25 from noon to 1 p.m. with an extended discussion through 1:30 p.m., in the Wittson Hall Amphitheater. Lunch will be provided. No registration is necessary.
The second event, “The World Cafe on Race, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity,” will take place on April 28 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Truhlsen Events Center in the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education.
Magda Peck, Sc.D., founder of the MP3 Health Group, former founding dean of the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, founder of CityMatch and former associate dean of Community Engagement at the UNMC College of Public Health, will facilitate the event. Registration is strongly recommended and can be done online through Eventbrite.
“There is no better time than now to kick off a conversation on these important issues that have captivated the national consciousness,” said Renaisa Anthony, M.D., deputy director of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities.
Participants at both events will be invited to explore several questions including:
- Does RACE matter at UNMC?
- How are we doing when it comes to inclusion, diversity and equity?
- What is the role of UNMC (both the academic and hospital side) to address its Healthy People 2020 goals of “eliminating disparities, achieving health equity and improving the health of all populations?”
- How do we start in our own UNMC backyard to ensure our campus is a diverse, inclusive and welcoming environment that fosters equity for all, including our students, faculty, staff, patients and community partners?
“Attendees are encouraged to be active participants in the discussion to seek solutions to ensure UNMC is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all,” Dr. Anthony said.
