Michael Ash, MD, executive vice president-chief transformation officer for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, has selected Jeff Bergholz to serve as interim chief information officer (CIO) for information technology.

Bergholz will assume his new role in July and succeed Brian Lancaster, who earlier this month announced he would begin a new role this summer as senior vice president, chief information and digital officer at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. The move puts Lancaster, a Kansas City native, closer to family.

Bergholz joined Nebraska Medicine and UNMC in 2017 and has served in a variety of IT leadership roles.

In making the announcement, Dr. Ash said an internal search committee has been formed to find a permanent replacement. The committee, which includes representation from both Nebraska Medicine and UNMC, will review more than four dozen applicants.

In addition, the position title has been changed to chief information and innovation officer, Dr. Ash said, to both acknowledge and elevate the role. Per the search guidelines, he said, the interim CIO is not eligible to apply for the permanent role.
