This summer may be one of the busiest ever in terms of campus construction.

That’s the word from UNMC Director for Facilities Planning and Construction Ron Schaefer.

With several projects in progress — including work on the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education that will cause temporary closings on part of 42nd Street — Schaefer said UNMC employees will need to be flexible in their travels around campus.

“The summer is a busy time of year for construction on this campus and this year that is especially true,” Schaefer said. “With all the work being done here, some automobile and pedestrian traffic disruption is inevitable. Our contractors are doing everything they can to make sure such inconveniences are as short as possible.”

The section of 42nd Street between Dewey and Emile streets will close for brief periods during the first three Saturdays in June (June 2, 9 and 16) as the pedestrian bridge connecting the Sorrell Center and Wittson Hall is delivered and installed.

The section of road also may be obstructed during some weekends and evenings in September as construction on the bridge continues, Schaefer said.

Other projects on campus this summer include:

  • Construction on the Research Center of Excellence II;
  • The cGMP Transplant Production Facility on the southwest corner of 42nd and Emile streets;
  • The Low Vision Center at the southwest corner of 38th Avenue and Jones Street;
  • Lane revision and street scaping on 42nd Street north of Harney Street and extending to Dodge Street;
  • Renovation of Bennett Hall, heating and air conditioning work in Wittson and Swanson halls; and
  • Water chiller installation at the East Utility Plant and chilled water distribution piping being installed on east campus.

The chilled water distribution piping installation will cause portions of 40th Street and Emile Street to close at various times and also will include closures of entrances to levels C and D of parking lot 4 for a few days later in the summer.

The other projects do not call for road closings at this time but sidewalks, hallways and other pedestrian thoroughfares may be blocked.

The exact dates and times for closings and other construction-related updates will be published in UNMC Today. Announcements and updates about future road closings and detours also will be posted on the facilities blog at http://www.unmc.edu/blog/construction/.

Employees can monitor these sites to be aware of any new traffic and construction developments.

“We hope the summer construction will cause few disruptions in terms of navigating on campus but these are busy times and will require us all to pay attention and be flexible,” Schaefer said.
