While not as bad as other states, Nebraska’s economy certainly feels the effects of the current financial crisis.

As such, state institutions must brace for difficult times.

At the medical center, that means faculty and staff must look for ways to conserve resources, UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., said during last week’s employee forums.

“The budget outlook for Nebraska is better than much of the rest of the country, but it’s still dismal,” Dr. Maurer said.

Dr. Maurer said there were no current plans for hiring and travel freezes at UNMC, referencing a recent letter sent to employees by NU President James B. Milliken concerning the state budget and its impact on the university.

Also during the forums, UNMC Human Resources Director John Russell reported on results from the 2008 UNMC Employee Satisfaction Survey.

In almost every category, UNMC employees were more satisfied with their workplace experience than they were when the last survey was taken in 2006, Russell said.

In the one category that saw a decline in satisfaction from 2006, the level of employee satisfaction was still very high, Russell said.

Public Affairs Director Renee Fry urged employees to participate in the “I Love UNMC” video campaign, which calls on staff, students, alumni and friends of the medical center to submit short videos that creatively show what they love about UNMC.

Videos will be posted on UNMC’s social media sites on YouTube, Facebook and MySpace and the creators of the most-viewed videos will receive prizes including a $300 Visa gift card and a special ticket package to the 2009 Nebraska-Oklahoma football game.

Fry pointed out that participants in the contest also are eligible to win prizes during random prize drawings that will be held throughout the contest. These awards are not based on the popularity of videos and winners will be eligible to win prizes such as a romance package at the Cornerstone Mansion Inn, tickets to a University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey game and gift cards to local businesses.

Fry urged employees to submit videos soon to be eligible to win prizes during the first random prize drawing, which is next Tuesday.
