Wellness Wednesday – Safety tips for Tornado Alley residents

Sunday's devastating tornado in Joplin, Mo., as well as several others that have hit in other parts of the country this spring, serve as stark reminders that we live in "Tornado Alley."

This spring's natural disasters have stretched the resources of the American Red Cross. Visit www.redcross.org to see ways you can support the Red Cross in its relief efforts.

Read information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency regarding tornadoes and tornado safety. Several methods will be used to communicate the severe weather information to employees at work at UNMC, including:

  • NOAA weather alert radios;
  • Audible devices on the fire alarm systems (some areas);
  • e2 Emergency Notification System (to key dept phone numbers);
  • e2 Text messages to cell phones for those who subscribed;
  • Text pagers;
  • House paging;
  • PC crawler; and
  • Broadcast media.

In addition, Douglas County will sound Civil Defense Warning Sirens. Employees are urged to learn where their safe areas are should tornadoes strike while they are at work.
