UNMC’s embryonic stem cell research efforts received a boost Wednesday thanks to a federal judge’s decision to throw out a case that challenged government funding of such research.

“From a university perspective, we are pleased that the judge has decided to throw out the case,” said Jennifer Larsen, M.D., vice chancellor for research. “We can now proceed with embryonic stem cell research and be in full compliance with federal guidelines.”

On the patient front, the ruling is good news as it brings hope to people with a variety of diseases who stand to benefit from the results of continued embryonic stem cell research, Dr. Larsen said.

The ruling also is a positive development for UNMC’s regenerative medicine program, said Dr. Larsen, who noted that embryonic stem cell research is just one aspect of UNMC’s regenerative medicine efforts.
