On Monday, Environmental Services will begin to phase out the use of trash liners in the black individual garbage receptacles that employees have at their desks.

EVS will soon remove trash liners from individual trash cans in a move that stands to save the medical center $100,000 each year.
It’s a move that EVS estimates could save the medical center up to $100,000 annually.

The initiative will not be implemented in conference rooms, labs, kitchenettes and research and patient care areas.

The black trash receptacles without liners can be used for non-recyclable items that are not wet, such as tissues and plastic bags. Designated trash cans with liners will be placed in various areas around office spaces for employees to discard food items and wet non-recyclables.

Blue receptacles without liners can still be used for recycling:

  • White paper;
  • Colored paper;
  • Envelopes;
  • Magazines;
  • Newspapers;
  • Folders; and
  • Cardboard packaging.

Questions about the new initiative should be directed to Environmental Services at 559-4073.

    Thus inspiring office workers to become trash liner thieves.

    Great idea — thank you. There's so much waste of energy/resources and all the simple, little things we each can do can add up to a lot of savings. I also really appreciate the recent ability to just keep the lights OFF (the "Flip the Switch" campaign) since there's plenty of natural light in our Center for Nursing Science building.
