Women and fashion the focus of March 22 Durham Museum presentation

In the 1930s, women were forbidden to show their thighs in public in Bermuda.

Female visitors and local residents, however, wanted to wear shorts and in order to do so, they simply lengthened the length of their shorts to the knee to cover their thighs.

And that was how Bermuda shorts came to be.

Learn about this and other fashion developments for women on Thursday during a campus Durham Museum presentation titled “Women and Fashion: A Step Back in Time.”

Who: Sue McLain, the owner of Yesterday’s Lady, a vintage fashion museum and store in Beatrice, will discuss the history of fashion and showcase many of the items from her collection highlighting on the women who influenced the fashion world.
