Women and fashion talk today at noon

Did you know the bra wasn’t patented until 1914?

The bra was created by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps, who used handkerchiefs to design the first rudimentary bra after she grew weary of having her camisole show when she wore a lace blouse.

Fashion statement takes off

Women everywhere loved Phelp’s new design, and the first bra took off in a big way. Phelps patented the bra in 1914 and years later, a woman named Ida Rosenthal started to design bras with different cup sizes.

Learn about this and other fashion developments for women today during a campus Durham Museum presentation titled “Women and Fashion: A Step Back in Time.”
