Ira Combs, community liaison nurse coordinator in the UNMC College of Public Health’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities, was awarded the Whitney M. Young Award Jr. Service Award from Boys Scouts of America. The award recognizes outstanding service by an adult individual or an organization for demonstrated involvement in the development and implementation of scouting opportunities for youth from rural or low-income urban backgrounds.

In recognition of VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Research Week, a poster session that focuses on research at the VA medical center will be held today in the Durham Research Center Atrium from 1 to 3 p.m. More than 38 posters, many of which feature research conducted by UNMC investigators, will be on display. Refreshments will be served.

A retirement tea for Katie Karrer, an employee relations technician in human resources, will be held Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Sorrell Center’s Linder Reading Room.

Eric Holmboe, M.D., chief medical officer and senior vice president of the American Board of Internal Medicine, will be the speaker for today’s Grand Rounds for General Internal Medicine. His talk — “Shifting Paradigms: Transformation and the Future of Medical Education” — will begin at noon in the Durham Research Center Amphitheater. The author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in professional journals, Dr. Holmboe is an expert in developing interventions to improve quality of care and methods in the evaluation of clinical competence.
