Student Spotlight — Gautam Malhotra

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet Gautam Malhotra, a fifth-year M.D./Ph.D. candidate.

  • Name: Gautam Malhotra
  • Hometown: Hayward, Calif.
  • Year/program: 5th year M.D./Ph.D. candidate

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

Last year, I had an opportunity to present my research at an international student conference in Shanghai and Tokyo. It was a great experience to meet and connect with other young scientists working around the world. This year, UNMC will host the conference in August, and I look forward to interacting with all the international students who will join us here in the fall.

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

Working in research these past few years, I’ve really been able to appreciate how collaborative everyone on campus is. There are many aspects of my research that require the input of other scientists, clinicians, bioinformatics and statisticians. We are fortunate that all these disciplines are present on our campus and that we are able to work with everyone to accomplish our goals.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • Coming from California, I love authentic Mexican food. I’m always on the hunt for a burrito that can stand up to my hometown staples.
  • I was a professional DJ while I was completing my master’s degree. I still enjoy mixing and digging through vinyl.
  • I met my wife taking the campus bus to our 8 a.m. organic chemistry class at Berkeley; 10 years later she still puts up with me.

I had the opportunity to collaborate with Gautam during the ISRF last year and found him to be a very dedicated, inspiring individual. He is driven to become both a great physician and researcher as well as to make a difference in the world in which we live. I have no doubt that he will achieve those goals.

I have to agree with Keith's comment that he will be a great physician and researcher. Having worked with Gautam during his very first year here, I found him to be compassionate, caring and dedicated. He is a very grounded individual, who will go far and achieve what he sets his mind on.
