Describe your research in laymen’s terms.

We are designing new compounds to fight drug-resistant staph infections, HIV-AIDS and cancer.

How do you want your research to translate to benefit patients?

Superbugs such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are difficult to kill. We want to find new compounds to control such resistant bacteria.

What is the best piece of advice anyone ever gave you, professional or personal?

The best advice was given by my Ph.D. adviser, Professor Robert J. Cushley, who told me to do original research and have fun!

• In my family, I am the first to reach North America.
