Key campus leaders, including UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dele Davies, M.D., attended an education banquet recently at the Field Club of Omaha to discuss educational innovations on campus.
The lunchtime event, which drew leaders from all colleges and units, was hosted by Howard Liu, M.D., and meant to showcase innovative work taking place across the spectrum of UNMC.
In opening the conference, Dr. Gold called the day’s program visionary and inspiring. “What I hope you will address today and what we will address as a university moving forward is who we teach, how we teach, what we teach and how we assess,” he said.
“It takes great risk and great courage to think about these questions,” he said. “But I think that UNMC, all of our health professions’ colleges, are uniquely positioned to ask those questions, to take those risks.”
“These are the efforts at UNMC that help define us as a premier educational institution and show us what the vision for our future is,” said Dr. Davies.
Speakers and their topics included:
- Kelly Caverzagie, M.D., traditional vs. competency-based medical education strategies.
- Dean Collier, Pharm.D., using simulated electronic health records to enhance learning and interprofessional skills.
- Heidi Keeler, Ph.D., and Lois Colburn, the Continuing Nursing Education Office’s collaborations across the state.
- Louise LaFramboise, Ph.D., the College of Nursing’s advancements in team-based learning.
- Kim McFarland, D.D.S., teledentistry as a possible approach to tackling dental shortages in rural areas of the state.
- Kyle Meyer, Ph.D., the School of Allied Health Professions’ instructional technology, interprofessional education and workforce advancement.
- Devin Nickol, M.D., the growth of interprofessional education, both on campus and nationally.
- Paul Paulman, M.D., and Patti Carstens, advancements in simulation.
- Alice Schumaker, Ph.D., online education, interdisciplinary and experiential learning and cutting edge education.
- Michael Wadman, M.D., and Chad Vokoun, M.D., educational innovations in general medical education.
