First Health Professions Career Day a success

More than 100 underserved youths from north and south Omaha took part this month in the first Health Professions Career Day at UNMC.

The youths, ages 14-18, worked with UNMC faculty and staff on activities such as learning how to distinguish heart and lung sounds and getting up close and hands-on with a human brain.

“Through this career day we hope to pique the interest of these youths by exposing them to a variety of health careers, so they can prepare themselves academically for their chosen field,” said Wayne Houston, community health program manager with the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the UNMC College of Public Health, which sponsored the event. “We also hope that by providing experiences such as this it will increase the number of diverse health care professionals.”

Every college was represented from dentistry to allied health to medicine to pharmacy, as well as biomedical research.
