This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony for UNMC’s 2019 Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator Award recipients.

  • Name: Satyanarayana Rachagani, Ph.D.
  • Title: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, College of Medicine
  • Joined UNMC: June 2008

The New Investigator Award

New Investigator Awards go to outstanding UNMC scientists who in the past two years have secured their first funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense or other national sources.
New Investigators also had to demonstrate scholarly activity such as publishing their research and/or presenting their findings at national conventions.

Research focus:

  • Pancreatic cancer; and
  • Inflammatory bowel disease.

The goal of my research is: To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the pancreatic cancer progression and metastasis; and to develop miRNA-based targeted therapies for pancreatic cancer.

My research will make a difference because:
Pancreatic cancer is a lethal malignancy with incidence-to-mortality ratio nearly equal and is poised to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death by the year 2030 in the United States. The grim prognosis of this disease is due to a lack of early diagnostic/prognostic markers and therapeutic options. To address these challenges, we are developing novel miRNA-based modalities to concurrently target pancreatic cancer cells, cancer stem cells, and tumor stroma to improve patient survival outcomes.

The best advice I’ve ever been given is: Continue to work hard and learn from your mistakes.

Three things you may not know about me are:

  • I always wanted to be a doctor.
  • I enjoy cooking and serving food to my family and friends.
  • I love to play tennis and swim with my kids.
