This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony on Feb. 24 for UNMC's 2021 Scientist Laureate, Distinguished Scientist, New Investigator and Community Service to Research Award recipients.

The New Investigator Award

The New Investigator Award is given to outstanding UNMC scientists who, in the past two years, have secured their first funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense or other national sources. New Investigator Award recipients also need to demonstrate scholarly activity, such as publishing their research and/or presenting their findings at national conventions.

  • Name: Jana Broadhurst, MD, PhD
  • Title: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Pathology Microbiology
  • Joined UNMC: September 2019
  • Hometown: Sherwood, Oregon

Research focus: Infectious disease diagnostics

Why is research important in the world today? Among the many values of research, and continuing to shape the way we do research, is the need to address vast inequities in access to the benefits of innovation and discovery.

My research will make a difference because: Diagnostic testing is an integral tool in protecting our communities from infectious disease threats. To make an impact, innovations in diagnostic technology must be driven by a clear understanding of gaps in clinical and public health systems of practice.

The best advice I’ve ever received is: Pravda se ukáže.

Three things you may not know about me are:

  • Dance is important to my sense of community and connection to local cultures.
  • Birding is one of my favorite ways to explore a new environment.
  • On any given day, my husband and I would rather be climbing a mountain.
