New simulator gives physicians high-tech training
Endoscopy is a procedure used to diagnose digestive disorders from colitis to cancer. Millions of people go through the procedure every year but learning how to perform an endoscopy takes practice. Now, physicians and medical residents at NHS can hone their skills on a high-tech, computerized simulator that gives them true-to-life practice.

Dr. Kitto bridged traditional, Native American medical approaches
UNMC alumnus Cecelia M. Kitto, M.D., of Niobrara died Sunday, Feb. 24, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. She was 60. Dr. Kitto graduated from the UNMC College of Medicine in 1979. A Native American, she served in various capacities for the Ponca and Omaha tribal populations.

The UNMC College of Medicine Alumni Association has appointed Duane Krause, M.D., as its new president. The Fremont resident will serve a two-year term on the 13-member volunteer board.

Correction: UNMC receives $26.6 million in grants
Research investigators at UNMC received $26.6 million in grants during the last six months of 2001 — a 29 percent increase over the same period in 2000. Monday’s story reported that UNMC had received $27.6 million in grants for a 33 percent increase. (The story archived Feb. 25 in UNMC Today has been corrected).

UNMC/NHS promote reading among children, parents
Surrounded by toothy smiles, Richard Beebe sits at a child-size table, reading the classic adventures of “Curious George.” Three days a week, the 17-year-old shares his love of books with children in the UNMC/NHS Pediatric Clinic. Beebe is the clinic’s first volunteer reader in the national Reach Out and Read Program, which makes early literacy a standard part of pediatric care. (See story for details on getting involved).

Dental students achieve 100 percent pass rate on national exam
Dental students at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln have demonstrated they are prepared for the challenges of practicing dentistry when they graduate in May. All of the 43 senior students recently passed Part 2 of the American Dental Association’s National Board Examination.

UNMC research grants total $26.6 million – a record high for six-month period
Research investigators at UNMC received $26.6 million in grants during the last six months of 2001 — a 29 percent increase over the same period in 2000. The increase indicates a new determination within UNMC’s research community to answer Chancellor Harold M. Maurer’s challenge to pursue more grants — and larger amounts — as the foundation for UNMC leadership in the health sciences, said David Crouse, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and associate dean for graduate studies and research.
