Why Study Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Diseases?

The mission of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at UNMC is to conduct the best possible research and provide the most rigorous and inspiring training in the areas of microbiology, pathology, immunology, host-pathogen interaction and related fields. Through such activities, our goal is to improve human and animal health as well as to improve our ability to be responsible stewards of a fragile earth. Through this website, we hope to present an overview of our research and training activities and to inspire like-minded individuals to join us in our endeavors.

Why Study Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Diseases at UNMC?

Our flexible and interdisciplinary graduate program accommodates a wide-range of student interests and backgrounds. The learning experience is enhanced by an outstanding seminar series and journal clubs in which the most current immunology research is discussed. The graduate program involves over 50 faculty members across campus, providing a high faculty/student ratio, while promoting an excellent environment for collegial interactions and stimulating exchanges of ideas. We also have strong relationships with other University of Nebraska’s campuses such as the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Nebraska Medicine, as well as with the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, which provides our students with even greater opportunities for collaborative research efforts.

Students in the Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Diseases graduate program participate in coursework and laboratory research that will prepare them for competitively securing rewarding research and teaching careers in academic institutions, biotechnology industries, biomedical laboratories, and government agencies.

The IPID program offers diverse research interests with a variety of distinctive and highly individualized opportunities for graduate students in Immunology, Infectious Disease, and Molecular Pathogenesis.
The flexible Graduate Program accommodates a wide-range of student interests and backgrounds.

Interactions with other departments at the Medical Center promote wider possibilities for collaborative research efforts.
The program is firmly grounded in the basic principles of biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, virology and microbiology.
