UNMC community strong in support of 2014 SciFest

Members of the UNMC community will be out in force for the 2014 Nebraska Science Festival. The UNMC and UNMC-affiliated booths are part of the Science Expos, which will be at The Durham Museum and the Strategic Air & Space Museum. They will include:

Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health
Come meet Heather the Hearing Mannequin, learn about how we hear (and how loud noise can permanently damage our hearing) and how we can protect our ears. Check out the demonstration on putting in ear plugs and take a pair home with you.

UNMC/Nebraska Physiological Society
Ever wondered how lungs inflate or how quickly your heartbeat can change? This booth will measure how much air is inside your lungs and how fast your heart responds to everyday activities.

UNMC Clinical Laboratory Science Program
Come extract a sample of your own DNA and take it home in a test tube. Presented by the UNMC School of Allied Health Professions Clinical Laboratory Science Program.

UNMC College of Pharmacy
Come see what proteins, nucleic acids and fats look like — catch a glimpse of a world full of busy, precise and elaborated machineries.

UNMC College of Public Health
Want to improve your family’s health but not sure where to begin? Live Well Omaha kids uses a healthy habits countdown tool which condenses multiple evidence-based health recommendations into an easy-to-remember countdown that people of any age can use to make positive, healthy choices.

UNMC Physicians
An ultraviolet “germ machine” will show particles on hands if they’re dirty. Family Medicine representatives also will teach kids about the importance of frequent hand washing.

UNMC Physicians ENT
Ever met a giant nose? Here’s your chance. Meet Dr. Knows and learn about germs, how to protect yourself from them and what exactly an ENT (ear, nose and throat) doctor does.

UNMC College of Nursing
Visit the HEROES booth — an interactive display to learn more about emergency preparedness and how to be ready when disasters strike.

LiveGreen
LiveGreen will test students’ knowledge on how long it takes for a can of pop, a plastic bag, a glass bottle, a newspaper and other everyday items to degrade in a landfill. Students will walk away with the idea that one person can make a difference.
