Parent PLUS Loans

This is a parent loan and the responsibility lies with the parent, not the student. Your parent/legal guardian must complete the Parent PLUS application and PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN) to secure the funds. The Department of Education will conduct a credit check on the parent borrower, at the time the PLUS application is completed. If the parent borrower is denied, the parent/student should contact our office to discuss the loan appeal process or other loan alternatives. To apply for a PLUS Loan, please follow these steps:

  • Complete the PLUS Application, and PLUS MPN.
  • Once we receive an approved PLUS application, we will process the application for the amount requested.

  • The funds will be posted to the student’s UNMC tuition/fee account based upon the term release date posted on the disbursement calendar. If the loan disbursement exceeds the tuition/fee balance, the credit balance will be issued as a refund to either the student or parent borrower as selected on the PLUS application. Students are encouraged to sign up for direct deposit in MyRecords to receive the refunds. Refunds to the parent borrower will be issued as a check and mailed to the parent borrower.

  • Please decline the loan on your MyRecords award screen if your parent does not elect to borrow through the PLUS Loan program. We will remove the PLUS Consent Form and PLUS MPN from your MyRecords TO DO list. You may request the loan be reinstated at any time during the academic year, provided your request is made before the APRIL 1 deadline to request academic year student loan aid.

Students also have the option of borrowing a private loan instead of; or in conjunction with, a Parent PLUS loan. Private loans may require a credit-worthy co-signer, but the student is the borrower on this type of loan. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid if you have any questions regarding the PLUS loan process.
