Admissions

To be considered for admission to the Scott Scholars Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements and complete the application process.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be accepted into the UNMC College of Medicine
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to community service, leadership, and innovation in healthcare
  • Show interest in experiential learning opportunities such as design thinking, research, and global health
  • Exhibit academic excellence and a desire to grow as a compassionate, service-driven physician

Application Process

The application includes the following components:

  • Photo/headshot: Your photograph will be used to identify you during your interview. Your photograph will not be included in the application materials provided to the selection committee.
  • Screenshot of MCAT Score
  • Resume or CV: Please list your scholastic distinctions, honorary academic fraternities, university service, community service, research experiences, internships, employment, volunteer positions, organizations, offices held, sports, scholarships, awards, and/or other activities. Include any leadership or special recognition you have experienced.
  • Short (3-5 minute) video essay submission: In your video, answer three of the following questions:
  1. Please describe your understanding of health design thinking and how you believe it can impact the field of medicine.
  2. The scholarship program aims to produce medical professionals who are committed to making a positive impact in Nebraska. How do you envision making a positive impact in health and medicine in Nebraska. 
  3. Are there any specific healthcare challenges or issues in Nebraska that you are particularly interested in addressing through the application of health design thinking principles? If so, please explain.
  4. Collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork are essential aspects of medicine. Please share examples of situations where you have successfully worked in a team, especially in contexts where diverse perspectives were involved.
  5. How might you apply the principles of health design thinking to improve patient outcomes and experiences? Please provide a specific example or scenario to illustrate your approach.
  6. This scholarship program will require a significant commitment of time and effort in support of your medicine-related training. How do you plan to balance the demands of the program with your other responsibilities and obligations?
  7. In your opinion, what qualities and characteristics make an exceptional medical professional, and how do you embody or aspire to embody these qualities?
  8. What are your long-term career goals in the field of medicine, and how does the scholarship program align with those aspirations?
  9. How do you plan to leverage the opportunities and resources provided by this scholarship program to maximize your learning and growth in medicine?
  10. Is there anything else you would like the scholarship committee to know about you, your experiences, or your aspirations in relation to health design thinking and practicing medicine in Nebraska?

Notes and Tips

  • You can film everything in one take or edit your video how you see fit. Feel free to take breaks and stitch it back together with your favorite video editor.
  • You may post your video as "unlisted" on YouTube, meaning only those with a direct link to the video can view it.
  • We recommend getting comfortable with your answers and speaking conversationally. Consider writing an outline and practicing from that. Avoid reading a verbatim script, if possible.
